What is an enabler? ?

I know it sounds like a dumb question but I've always wondered what it is... just curious.

  1. A person who enables the addiction to go on is the enabler. They help the addicted person become further addicted.


  2. Someone who unknowingly helps someone keep up their bad addiction.    Like if your married to an alcoholic and you make the phone call to his work saying he is sick, etc....

  3. an enabler is someone who for what ever reason continues to cover up in one way or another for another person, whether its with excuses, money or personal loss to themselves.  example-giving them money to pay any bill, lying to someone you love about why you gave that person money, opening your house cause now they have no where to go, until you give them more money or a ride or both to get what ever they need agian.

  4. It's someone who "enables" another to continue his or her undesirable behavior, like the person who calls in sick for an alcoholic spouse, or the victim of domestic violence who explains away her injuries as the result of an accident.
