  1. It comes from the word "sabbath", which is a day of rest in the Law given to Moses.  The modern definition is a period of rest.  According to my Merriam Webster dictionary, it comes from the Greek word sabbatikos, Latin word sabbaticus and French sabbatique.  I hope that helps.
