  1. The best surfboard for a beginner is a funboard or an egg, which is a fairly wide and thick board from 7' to 8' in length, typically having a blunt or rounded nose. A good rule of thumb is to get something 14" longer than you are tall, and at least 20" wide.

A longboard, a round-nosed board of 9' or more length, is too difficult to paddle and control for most beginners, while a shortboard is typically too thin, narrow, and short, rendering it unstable and difficult to paddle.

Look for a used board when first starting out. Most surf shops should have some sort of used board selection. There may also be used-equipment retailers in your area, like "Play it Again Sports." Look in newspapers for boards for sale. Be sure to look the board over before purchasing:

Make sure there aren't any dings, or holes in the board. If there are, you will need to repair them.

Test the deck for soft, bubbly, delamination, which weakens the board and allows it to take on water.

Make sure the fins are intact and that there is a plug on the deck for a leash.

Again, look for something with general characteristics of being wide, thick, and long as opposed to narrow, short, and thin.

The board need not be totally pristine; once you really get into surfing you'll likely want to upgrade to something different.

  2. hey mate. I work as a surf instructor and we start everyone off on longboards. Longboards are great for learning because they are easier to paddle, catch waves, and stand up. They are harder to turn but you will not be turning when you first start out. For your height i would recommend a 9 foot.

Once you get the hang of the 9 foot board you can slowly move to a shorter board such as an egg (7-8 foot) or possibly even a fish (a thick shortboard that is easy to catch was).  This boards will be easier to turn and alot quicker.

As a beginner i would recommend buying a used board. First, you will probably be dinging it up. Second, as you get better you will probably what a more high performance board. Third, you will quickly find out that finding the perfect board is a task in itself (most surfers have a quiver of boards). Fourth, they are expensive.

Good luck and i will see ya in the water.

  3. Something in the 8 foot range should work for you.  Go with a fun or longboard shape.  Get a used board if possible.  A fun board  will make learning much easier but after you figure it out you will either want to go shorter or longer depending upon where you want to take your surfing.

  4. i dnt know about weight n height n all that.. but all beginners should start on a long board! :)

  5. The best board for a beginer is your own body. No surfboard at all. Learn to read the waves and feel the water from within.

Feel the breathing of the ocean tugging at your fins. Bodysurfing will give you a more intimate understanding of how waves work. Before you think about what size board you need learn to be comfortable in the surf without one.Just some friendly advice..Jerry.
