  1. According to sociological cultural theory, there are four components to any culture: signs/symbols, language, values/beliefs, and norms.

Language really sticks out for me as something unique and important to Hawaii's culture. It's something that they have managed to preserve and value since they were colonized by America. But if you know of any interesting symbols, values, or norms that are important to Hawaii, they will be an excellent compliment to your project!

  2. The Ohana.  Family values are important and you don't have to be a blood relative to be considered to be one of the family.  There was a tradition of "hanai"  (allowing another family to raise your child) among the ruling classes of old Hawaii that served to bring the ruling families closer together.

For modern Hawaii look into pidgen language.  With several different languages arriving at the islands at roughly the same time a new "language" evolved to allow the native Hawaiians, Portuguese, Haole, Japanese to all communicate.
