What is an individual filament of a fungus, with an elongated mass of cytoplasm called?

  1. Hyphae grow together to form a network of fibers called a mycelium mat. Also, individual hypha entwine and thicken to produce what is called 'primordia'. These 'primordia' are what some people refer to as "pinheads" because of the resemblance to a pin with a large pinhead. Primordia is the interim name in between the mycelium and fruiting body stage.
