  1. A windsock indicates both direction and velocity of the wind.

The direction is the opposite of what the sock is facing (ie. if the sock is facing due North, it is a Southerly wind).

The velocity is measured by the angle the sock is pointing from the ground. In low winds, the sock droops towards the ground, in high winds it is horizontal to the ground.

  2. wind vane -

Instrument that indicates wind direction using a vane that rotates around a vertical axis

A windsock is another instrument that can be used to indicate the wind direction. It is commonly used at airports.

Cup anemometer - This instrument is used to measure the horizontal wind speed. It is used together with a wind vane. The wind will cause the three hemispheric cups to rotate around the vertical axis. The faster the cups spin, the faster the wind speed. The rotations of the cups are counted either mechanically or electrically

  3. anemometer

  4. A big rooster on a house that turns when the wind blows.

    A weather vane.
