My Cockatiel Sammy just recently passed away by choking, i think, but i'm not really sure. He just started breathing funny, then within two minutes of him breathing weird he collapsed dead. I'm thirteen, and my mom won't let me get something too expensive, what kind of bird should I get? Thanx for any response!

  1. My Green cheek conure is very entertaining and very affectionate!  As far as cost they're about $150 - more or less depending onyour area.

  2. why didnt you take your bird to the vet after a few days of it breathing funny? was it not worth it to you? didnt you love it enough? it suffered for the last 2 weeks of its life before finally dying probably from suffocation, dont you feel bad? i suggest a gold fish for you, or maybe an ant farm ;]

  3. I suggest a parakeet. They're cute. Though they can't talk (some do) they are still great birds. My parakeet died 5days ago and i loved that keet so much. He always used to fly on my shoulder and give me company even though he wanted to hang out with his other three friends. Sorry to hear about your tiel'.

  4. I'm so sorry about your Sammy passing.

Before you get another bird you should do a little research on things that are toxic to them.  It's just my opinion, but there is a chance that your Sammy didn't choke.  If he was breathing funny and then passed it could have been something toxic to birds in the air.  For example, fumes from a teflon pan, waffle grill, pancake griddle, laundry iron or even a space heater.  Things that seem insignificant to us can kill these little birds.

As for what bird you should get, I was recently going to get a parakeet and went to see a breeder.  She happened to have pacific parrotlets and I fell in love.  I knew nothing about these adorable little birds so I came home and did some research and then put a down payment on one the next day.  He's a baby and is just growing his feathers in so we can't bring him home for another 3 weeks but we get to visit him and hold him while he learns to eat on his own.

The best bird to get is one that is hand fed and pampered.  The more human contact, the better!  You want your baby to be used to human hands.  You should try to stay away from pet stores if you can.  Here is a link where you can find bird breeders (for many different birds) in your area.  http://www.birdbreeders.com/breedersearc...

A parrotlet is basically just the smallest parrot you can keep as a pet.  They are about 4-5 inches tall and so adorable.  They need lots of love and attention.  You can get them in a few different colors but the green ones will be cheaper.  They talk like little robots (the males more than females).  A green one can cost you anywhere from 75-150 depending on your breeder.  Here is a link to tell you more about these little birds http://www.parrotlets.com/Species.html

If you do decide to get a parrotlet, there is a yahoo group that can help you learn more about them and ensure you make safe choices for your new birdie.  It's called parrotletsplus...  I think this link will take you there but if not just search for the group on yahoo... http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/Parro...

Good Luck in your search!  I hope this helps.  Remember, if you don't decide on a parrotlet, that breeder search can still help you find your bird.

  5. I would look into getting another cockatiel, I love cockatiels and they are great birds. You can  look into adopting a cockatiel. I would google "Bird Adoption" and look for an adoption center near you.

It does sounds like he could have breathed something toxic, or he could have had a heart attack. If your family uses teflon pans it would be a good idea not to use those if you have a bird in the house.

I'm sorry for your loss! Good luck with your current search!

  6. get a hand raised quaker parrot, a hand raised cockatiel,  but make sure that you are sure what your other bird died  of.  is it possible that it was from a household cleaning product, or use of an oven cleaner, or use of non-stick cooking pans.  all these things and more will kill a bird.

  7. a paracett would be cool for you

  8. A new cockatiel or a quaker parrot???? prices depend on your area. quakers have an excellent vocabulary. i am getting a quaker soon for 150. if you were to get one i advise green due to birth defects on other colors. they are slightly bigger than a cockatiel and do not screech that often but may become territorial. quakers usually come from a family owned bird store or a local breeder.

    Good Luck!!!
