I'm not sure what to ask in this letter. I was thinking about asking for their viewpoint on what makes a successful leader, but I'm not sure how to phrase it or if it is even a good interpersonal question for a complete stranger.

You could give your viewpoint on a specific subject and ask him if he agrees or disagrees, and why.
