  1. First you have to determine what it is you are seeking to find out about.

    Suppose it is a murder:

    You need to know

    Who died

    What they died from,

If foul play who killed them

So then you examine the evidence

Speak to friends and family members about the events leading up to that time of death

    Determine the cause of death

    Tag and bag all clues

Talk to forensics (they have a separate type of investigation)

    And narrow down the suspects,

Propose the best theory you can come up with

Find out if you can prove or disprove it,

If disprovable then seek a new suspect.

If not disprovable you may have your criminal

Seek solid evidence that will convict.

That is it in a nutshell
