What is an ionic compound?

I need a simplified answer..not one copied and pasted from wikipedia or anything, but a simple definition that includes the information.

  1. The guy above has got it, except it doesnt have to be 1 electron, it can be any number, normally 1,2,3 or 4 though.


  2. an ionic compound is a compound (formed by normally two elemnts) and bonded by an ionic bond. an ioinic bond happens between a metal and a non metal. one will gain an electron (called an anion), one will lose one (called a cation). and these are called IONS!!

  3. Every atom attracts electrons differently and that is called electronegativity.  If there is a great difference between two bonded elements, then one of them holds the electrons in the bond most of the time.  Then it is called an ionic bond rather than a covalent bond where the electrons are shared more evenly.
