  1. Operas have no speaking parts, are highly dramaticized, and are sung in either Italian or French (I'm pretty sure it's Italian though)

Musicals have spoken parts in songs and between lines, there is some lightheartedness and sadness to certain parts, and are translated into different languages.

  2. an opera is just words set to music and there is generally no normal talking. all opera singing. if it does have dialogue it's called and operetta

but a musical is basically a play with songs and dancing

  3. An opera is the eqivalent of a dramatic play or film, whereas a musical is usually a light-hearted comedic story with a happy ending.

  4. An opera is almost always in a romantic language (i.e.: French, Italian or Spanish) and is entirely in song. A musical is a play (dramatic or comedic) that is interjected with songs having to do with what is occurring in the story line as it takes place.

  5. I thought Operas were sung only and Musicals had singing and dialogue as well

  6. opera is not same as musical.because we don't get the real sound from opera.but we get it in musical.

  7. An opera is sung all the wat through there is no dialogue where the acvtors are just talking and not singing. You have your classic operas like La Bohem and Madame Butterfly, in the 60's and 70's came the rock opera but again singing all the way through The Who's Tommy, Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita. A musical has songs and dialouge in it Oklahoma, My Fair Lady, Wicked, Hairspray, Swenny Todd are musicals. Oh and a big misconception Phantom of the Opera is not an opera its just the name of the book there is dialogue it bugs me when people say its an opera opera style music but it is still a musical.

Not all operas are tragic there is an opera of Alice in Wonderland, and the opera The magic Flute both very funny and light. Not all musicals are light and fluffy Miss. Saigon, Les Miserables, Ragtime, Jekyll & Hyde, Carousel all very sad shows.

Operas can be in any language most common is Italian, but it could be in French, Die Federmus is ine German, Japanese, there are versions of A Streetcar Named Desire, The Crucible, Black operas like Porgy & Bess and even a ragtime version opera called Tremonisia by Scott Joplin are all in English
