  1. Galicia has its own micro-climate which makes it similar to Ireland...very lush green and with a lot of rain. It is the rainiest part of Spain... The characterisitics??? The galician language called "gallego" (same name as the inhabitants of this region). which is basically a mixture of spanish and portuguese, with some autoctonous words. Another thing that relates it to Ireland is the celtic origin of its people...

The area is dedicated mainly to fishing, and as such has some magnificent seafood dishes and restaurants everywhere.

The most mervelous city in Galicia is Santiago de Compostela, a town of great medieval beauty, dedicated to Saint James. the cathedral being the main visiting point of the city, and also the final destination of all those who make the pilgrimage to Santiago which is famous worldwide.

You have the following websites for reference material:

  2. Galicia is part of "Green Spain" gets a lot of rainfall and is known for it's "rias"  -- fjord like estuaries that make the coast  look like Norway. The climate in summer is cooler than the rest of Spain.

The Gallegeo dialect is closely related to Portuguese.

Gegraphically, the "rías" (Rías Altas, Rías Medias, Rías Baixas) are one of the most outstanding features in Galicia. Also its coast: The Seafood Coast. A lot of people living on the coast work fishing. It´s a really green land; it rains a lot and everything is always green. In the inside of Galicia there are vast green territories for pasture. Milk from Galicia is very appreciated.

Their local language is "Gallego" ; the way they pronounce Spanish is so typical that you can say when someone comes from Galicia just by hearing them (could be similar to the southern "drawing" in the USA; I mean that when you listen to that "drawing" you do know that person comes from the southern states).

Their people are said to answer with questions, instead of giving you a direct answer. Their land is also said to be the home of "witches" or faires. It´s a saying for that people that says: we don´t believe in fairies (or witches) but I know they exist (in Spanish it rhymes, that´s the fun!!).

One of the important places is Santiago de Compostela, known by its Cathedral and also for the "Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage.
