  1. Here you go............I started swimming in the ocean and back bays when I was in first grade or so. When I turned 13 or 14, I started surfing. I was very fortunate, I lived in a city, but spent my summers in a seashore town.I swam, and body surfed, and body boarded,  and went scuba diving. I even surfed in some of the places that i went in the Navy in the early 70s.

I moved to a shore resort, and lived there for about 12 years. i still surfed, but not as much as I had when I was younger. I moved back to the city, but didn't stop surfing. In fact, i started surfing more. I started surfing with my teenage son, and then later with my twenty-something son-in-law.

I live two hours from the beach, but I make the trip as often as possible. I live in the northeast U.S., so sometimes I take a week or so to go to S. Carolina to surf.

I have five grand kids (ages 5 through 9), who are all at various stages of learning to swim in the ocean, boogie board and surf. I read "Yahoo Answers - surfing" and answer questions all the time. Tomorrow, I'm going to put two or three of my surfboards on my car, load up the fishing rods and my two grandsons and go for a week at the beach. My wife, who doesn't go in the ocean at all, will be my co-pilot.

I expect to surf one or two sessions every day. I am 56 years old, and I refer to myself as an avid surfer. I figure that 42 years of surfing, and still be willing to drive two hours, one way, for a two hour surf session, is qualification enough for the "avid" title.

  2. Someone who loves surfing, is enthusiastic about the sport, and does it as often as he/she can.

    Same as avid golfer, etc.

  3. If you have to ask what it is, you aren't it.
