  3. An "F" paper fails to meet the purpose of the assignment.  I often see papers where students answer a question they WISH were being asked instead of the one the prompt is actually asking them to answer.

    It can also be that the paper is too short to evaluate or is missing elements that your teacher specified as requirements when he or she assigned the paper.

  4. Any grade below 60% usually.

  5. I  would  presume it  was not on subject requested,  or  too short,  or  not  able to understand,  or  turned in too late,  or  several  of  above.  ASK reasons to  the  teacher  or  principal.
