What is an "a" wedge?

I just got a new set of golf clubs and there is an a wedge and a pitching wedge. What does a stand for? what is its function? Is it the same thing as a sand wedge?

A wedge in golf is a subset of the iron family of golf clubs designed for a particular situation. They are created with modified soles and provide help in shots through the rough or sand. As they have short shaft due to which it is easy to control. Wedges are available in a variety of configurations and are categorized as pitching wedges, sand wedges, gap/approach wedges and lob wedges.
