Question:

What is an "immortal husband"?

I'm reading the Odyssey by Homer right now , and am wondering what Calypso meant by wanting to make Odysseus her immortal husband? Does it just mean that she wants him to be forever loyal to her , or what? If anyone could help me out that'd be great. Thanks. :)

  1. It means that she would ask Zeus to grant Odysseus eternal life and eternal youth. That is, she would ask to make him immortal, so he could stay with her forever. Because he's human and would die, otherwise. Whereas Calypso is a minor goddess and will live forever. She is essentially trying to bribe him into staying with her and forgetting that Penelope exists.

  2. Michelle hit the nail on the head.

She wanted Odysseus to become a god, like her.

Incidentally, I've had that same problem with some of the women I've dated!  It's awkward, but I've managed to deal with it tactfully.
