  1. Standard DVDs have a resolution of 720x480.

    Upconverting DVDs can take standard DVDs and scale/convert them up to 720p or even 1080p resolutions.

    Unless you buy a really high-end upconverting player, the same functionality and picture quality is available for free in any HDTV.

    If you can, wait until you can afford a Blue-ray (true-HD) player. If not, buy the cheapest DVD player with component out!
