Una comunidad autónoma, or autonomous region. There are 17 in Spain, each has it's own local government.

Its title is officially Región Autónoma, and its government is ROUGHLY equivalent to a state in the US or a province in Canada.  

Each region has its own government, just like we have, here, and the relationship to the people and the national government is similar to that of states, here.
