  1. The idea of applying robotics technology in agriculture is very new. The main area of application of robots in agriculture is at the harvesting stage. Fruit picking robot and sheep shearing robot are designed to replace human labor. The agricultural industry is behind other industries in using robots because the sort of jobs involved in agriculture are not straight forward and many repetitive tasks are not exactly the same every time. In most cases, a lot of factors have to be considered(ie: size and color of the fruit to be picked) before the commencement of a task.  The big advantage is they are labor saving.  The biggest disadvantage right now is they are expensive and new and don't have all the bugs worked out yet.

  2. hatchery have a lot of robotics for handling eggs, wine vineyard now have robotic grape pickers like large brushes that rub them off the vine, and they now have a gps guide harvestors for wheat and grass cutters

  3. do you mean robots as a machinery? machines are used all the time in harvesting fruits from orchards. This is good in that its fast for harvesting. However, robots can damage (bruising) the fruit while picking. They don't know which fruit is at it's best quality when it is picking. Different types of machines are used to sow seeds as well. This could be positive in it's accuracy of covering the ground area vs. manual labor. However, if the machinery is heavy, it could compact the soil and damage soil quality.

  4. There are some pretty amazing cow milking machines out there as well.

  5. The latest is a robotic apple picker. It uses machine vision to locate apples on a tree, color filters them to spot ripe ones, and then registers on the image to position a robotic grabber that pulls the apple off the tree. It is much faster than humans but only practical if you have a lot of trees.
