  1. A very important question in these times. Transcendentalism is the belief that there is something "above" or outside of ourselves that is going to save us - like a deity - that will help us overcome ourselves.  Anti-transcendentalism is a reaction against this belief - it is a belief that "God" (if he exists) is within us - our own salvation is inside of us (I just couched this is religious terms, but anti-transcendentalism only arose relatively recently as science seemed to disprove religious explanations, or even "disprove God"). Transcendentalist believes other(s) will save us from ourselves - anti-transcendentalists believe we will save ourselves.

If we are approaching the end of human time - some would say the Mayan calendar will end in the year 2012 - then, a strong anti-transcendentalist movement could allow us to seek a common solution to our human problems. Or, it could trigger a war between atheists and religious fundamentalists. It could go either way.
