What is appropriate to say at a funeral visitation?

A friend of our family passed away this week and I'm not sure of the right words to say to his wife and son (the son is my age). What is appropriate?

  1. uhm whenever im at a funeral and dont know what to say i usually just say "im very sorry :[" and give them a hug if your older. maybe talk to the son some about memories (if you do that keep the subject light and happy) sorry i cant be more help


  2. Best thing to do is to keep it simple as possible. Just say something like I'm so sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers. Don't go on and on with it. Just make it as short, but respectful as possible.

  4. my heart goes out to you and if you need anything don't hesitate to ask.

  5. Just say, "I'm so sorry," or something similar.  Squeeze their hands or hug them, whichever seems more appropriate.  If you knew the father, share some pleasant memory of him if you have the time.  There may be a long line of friends waiting to offer condolences, so that you won't have to think of much to say!
