  1. I would just send a card, and talk to the nurse about perhaps using some of their favourite toiletries eg, nice shampoos.

They should be willing to use them, as most hospitals will insist on using cheap toiletries. They should be unopened, new, and given to the nurse.

The patient is likely to be sedated/unconscious for most of the day, so being a supportive friend is important. Helping out the family with their day to day routines is one of the best gifts you can give. They will probably be visiting the hospital every day.

It is correct about not bringing in any flowers.

  2. a fruit basket would be great for the family

  3. If I remember correctly, CCU is Critical Care Unit and that would be the same as a "rest home". I think a card would be all that is necessary with a handwritten note to offer yourself for doing whatever you can do. Send it to the family if the patient is not lucid. At least they will know you are thinking of them.

  4. Space in ICU can be very limited. Some hospitals do not allow flowers or balloons. The patient may have diet restrictions as well, so check before sending food.

One he/she gets to a regular room, a plant is nice as it lasts longer.

The family could use gift cards to nearby restaurants as hospital food isn't the best and some cafeterias have limited serving hours for visitors.

Books and magazines are nice for patient and family.

  5. It all depends on how close you are with the person/family. I would send the person a card, no balloons or flowers-- most hospitals don't even permit fresh flowers anymore. If the family is a wreck, maybe call them up and ask if you can go make dinner for them. Usually people who have crises like these just need simple things... not flowers or gifts to remind them of their situation.
