  1. By sponge colony, do you mean that a sponge is like a colony of cells?  If so:

    Similarities:

    Both are suspension feeders

    Both can be fragmented and continue to grow as two different animals/colonies

    Both have a nonliving matrix that constitutes the bulk of the "colony"

    Both are hermaphrodites and spawn

    Differences:

    A sponge is considered a single organism made up of a colony of cells while coral polyps are individual animals who live in a colony (in other words, the members of the colony in the sponge are single cells while the members of the colony in a coral are multicellular polyps).

    Corals have true tissue layers
