  1. Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. There is no known single cause for autism, but increased awareness and funding can help families today.

Here are some signs to look for in the children in your life:

Lack of or delay in spoken language

Repetitive use of language and/or motor mannerisms (e.g., hand-flapping, twirling objects)

    Little or no eye contact

Lack of interest in peer relationships

Lack of spontaneous or make-believe play

Persistent fixation on parts of objects

Autism is one of five disorders that falls under the umbrella of Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD), a category of neurological disorders characterized by “severe and pervasive impairment in several areas of development.”

    What is Asperger's Syndrome?

What distinguishes Asperger's Syndrome from autism is the severity of the symptoms and the absence of language delays. Children with Asperger's may be only mildly affected and frequently have good language and cognitive skills. To the untrained observer, a child with Asperger's may seem just like a normal child behaving differently. They may be socially awkward, not understanding of conventional social rules, or show a lack of empathy. They may make limited eye contact, seem to be unengaged in a conversation, and not understand the use of gestures.

One of the major differences between Asperger's Syndrome and autism is that, by definition, there is no speech delay in Asperger's. In fact, children with Asperger's frequently have good language skills; they simply use language in different ways. Speech patterns may be unusual, lack inflection, or have a rhythmic nature or it may be formal, but too loud or high pitched. Children with Asperger's may not understand the subtleties of language, such as irony and humor, or they may not recognize the give-and-take nature of a conversation.

Another distinction between Asperger's Syndrome and autism concerns cognitive ability. While some individuals with autism experience mental retardation, by definition a person with Asperger's cannot possess a "clinically significant" cognitive delay, and most possess average to above-average intelligence.

Many autistic children benefit from a gluten-free/casein-free diet.

  2. autism (and aspergers) are NOT personality disorders-they are NEUROLOGICAL disorders.

They are developmental disorders that involve language and social difficulties and can involve cognitive and motor difficulties.

People on the autism spectrum often have difficulty processing sensory (sight, sound, touch, smell, taste) input-they perceive it as too strong or too light...

  3. They are personality disorders which make you more socially unaware.

You need to search the internet for more info.

  4. Autism-The person has speech and motor deficiencies and is socially unreceptive of subtle clues

Aspergers-A specific type of autism. They have a normal amount of intelligence but many obsess over one thing they like and fit into one stereotype.  Also they are not aware of subtle clues socially.  They take things litterally.  They are hard to  understand, even when they are trying to please you.  Many people with aspergers have a big loyalty to their friends, but when you break their trust, its hard to gain back.

  5. Chill.  I didn't understand 90% of what you just wrote.

But to answer your question, autism and Asperger's syndrome, as well as other Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs)  are neurological disorders.  There are plenty of theories as to causes, but I'm not going to go into them right now because I just don't feel like it.

Basically, autism in general causes social and communication deficits. Classic, or Kanner's autism, is typically more noticeable, in general, than Asperger's or what some people call High Functioning autism. Both are associates with repetitive behaviors or "stimmimg" as well as problems with reading body language and other non-verbal cues.  Autistic Disorder is associated with a delay in developing speeching skills in early childhood, while one of the diagnostic criteria for Asperger's disorder is that there was NO delay in the development of speech.  However, that doesn't mean we're perfect at communicating verbally.  Hyperlexia can be associated with Asperger's, as can pedantic speech or writing.  Often people on the autistic spectrum are descibed as anti-social or socially inept.  Reakky, I wouldn't call it anti-social; many of us would love to be able to interact with others easily, we just don't know how.   It also can be associated with concrete thinking and other learning problems.  It's a very complex syndrome, and really, you're not going to get a full answer her eon Yahoo! Answers. If you want to know more about it, then read about it, whether it's books or websites or whatever.  One word of caution: "Autism Speaks" is full of c**p, don't listen to their lies.  Plenty of autistic people can speak for themselves just fine. Cures are not really what most of us are looking for; just acceptance.

In short, it's a neurological difference.
