What is astigmatism and why would I want it corrected?

What exactly is astigmatism?

I have it, but does it really matter?

Does it need to be corrected?

astigmatism is when an optical system has different foci for rays that propagate in two perpendicular planes. If an optical system with astigmatism is used to form an image of a cross, the vertical and horizontal lines will be in sharp focus at two different distances. The term comes from the Greek α- (a-) meaning "without" and στίγμα (stigma), "a mark, spot, puncture".[

An astigmatism is when your eye is not exactly spherical (round).

It's kind of like when the moon is almost full, but not quite. Some people's are worse than others, but if you want to see well, yes, your astigmatism correction (that would be in your glasses and/or contact lens prescription) will definitely help. They target the flat spot, and correct it to how your eye would see if it were perfectly round.

It's hard to explain, but it's just part of your Rx. Most people have an astigmatism and it is not a big deal.

Your eye is shaped like a football and the pointed ends go front to back, not side by side. That's how someone explained it to me. I have it to the nth degree and I have tried every contact in the optical world, and none of them work. They always float off and away from the iris. So I stick to glasses.I am not even a good candidate for laser surgery, or so I've been told. Ask your eye doctor if it is necessary to correct it. But I think I asked once and they told me it would only get worse. And my actual vision is not that bad.

it just means that your vision isnt as sharp as it could be. i have one too and its really bad...if your vision is perfect with a slight astigmatism dont worry about it. but if you already have bad vision and you wear contacts or glasses you should probably get it corrected because it could get worse and if you already have bad vision you might as well right?

i currently have astigmatism in my right eye, and i wear contacts.

i would personally go get yours eyes checked, cause if you dont have great vision right now it gets super worse when you get older :-/

astigmatism basically is either one eye sees not as strong as the other, or both eyes are weak.

go get them checked! :D
