  1. a cotyledon, upon germination, may become the embryonic first leaves of a seedling. before germination, a part of the cotyledon (scutellum) can absorb food frm the endosperm (i shall elaborate on wat the endosperm is later on) as it is the only thing that is able to absorb the stored food. after germination and a bit of growth, the cotyledon can absorb sunlight, producing food for the plant.

the function of an endosperm is different according to the species.

for grains: the endosperm persists to the mature seed stage as a storage tissue.

for the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris): it is absorbed during embryo development and the function of storage tissue is performed by enlarged seed leaves (cotyledons).

for corn: the storage function is distributed between both endosperm and the embryo.

there are many more examples, but they are quite redundant.

in short, the basic function of a cotyledon is to get stored food frm the endosperm, and the function of the endosperm is to store food for the plant.

    hope this helps! =)
