  1. Not enough is being done.

I went to an event where a former homeless man spoke to a large luncheon about the local homeless shelter.  His name was Denver Moore, he told his story about being homeless and how $20.00 changed his life---and how we as a community could help other homeless people in our city.  It was inspiring and a different way of looking at the homeless.

The $20.00 was given to him by someone who figured he would just drink it away.  Denver took the $20.00 to a bar but while he was sitting there he met someone who would help change his life---starting by taking him into his home to live.

Denver Moore recommends that each large city build a homeless shelter that people can be proud of, not some run down building, hidden off the beaten path where the homeless are forgotten.  Denver says that the homeless need to feel good about themselves to help them out of the downward cycle they live and it starts with a place they can live and be proud of their surroundings.

Denver has a book called, "Same Kind of Different Like Me", it's a great read.

  2. The Homeless Alliance is currently developing a comprehensive resource center where people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness can access the services they need to achieve long-term stability in their lives. This facility, the WestTown Resource Center, will provide day services to the homeless and those at risk of homelessness in central Oklahoma by locating multiple service agencies on one site. The property is just west of downtown, located at NW 3rd Street and Virginia Avenue in Oklahoma City. While the project is being developed by the Homeless Alliance, all services will be provided by existing agencies in Oklahoma City. The WestTown Resource Center will be a broad collaboration with the faith community and multiple social service agencies.
