What is best, most cost productive form of advertising?

Looking to advertise my business promoting and selling educational courses within the construction industry and wondered about best way to promote. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Go to where your target market 'gathers'.  Check out the industry publications and send them a press release that has useful information in it for readers - not a plug for your business.  Suggest to them that you write a regular column for them.  Then you can negotiate a very favourable deal for advertising with them and people will recognise you as the person who writes a useful column.  (I do this with one of our target markets and it works well.)

Know who your ideal customer is and target them directly.  Research them thoroughly before you do so that you can talk to them in a way that shows you know something about them.  For example, if your target is companies employing between 10 and 50 people in the South East of England, you can do a lot of research on the web that will find you exactly those companies.  Find the names of the people to approach.

Careful targeting will give you the best return for your marketing spend.

Hand out posters, maybe you could try posting leaflets through peoples doors. :-)

Go to somewhere like vista print who will do business cards and leaflets very cheap, check out their special offers sometimes you can get a load free. Then mail or email local companies, then expand to other companies on the net

i have my own business and i designed my flyers through printmaster for free. printed it out along with my own business cards. my unemployment office lets you run copies of your "RESUME...WINK WINK" off for free...maybe 500 or so copies of your "RESUME...lol" oh yeah craigslist.org very good for free ad internet posting. check your search engine for free ad post that helps a lot
