What is best bedding for dog house that doesn't attact insects/fleas and other?

Was using a nice large pillow that hadn't been outside long. Dog came in after only 4 hrs, the other day and was itching around eyes and ears and whining with aggrivation/pain. Could this be a mite infestation of pillow? Already removed pillow. Would using HAY be the best bedding? Have treated entire dog access area with 7Dust many times.

Cedar shavings for summer and straw for winter.Don't use Sevin on the dog,get some Frontline Plus from your vet.It will kill fleas for a month and keep the eggs from hatching.To keep flies away,use Fly's Off,which you can buy at most pet or farm stores,and keep the dog's area clean and free of f***s and uneaten food. The dog may have allergies,which would require the attention of a vet.
