  1. It is irrelevant of Panel technology and depends on the scaler and video deinterlacer processor being used by the TV manufacturer.

Panasonic and Sony are known to even have their own ICs.

If the signal is digital (digital cable or sat), all work quite well. If it is analog cable, some work better than others, but really, if you get an HDTV you better switch to digital SD as well.

  2. I really can't say one is better than the other for SD.  Picture quality depends on so many things.  Best thing to do is go to a retailer, ask to have units that you are interested in set to an SD feed and watch them.

We have a  50" Panasonic 720p plasma and it looks pretty decent in SD but it' freaking awesome in HD.

More and more "equipment" is coming out in HD and some of it is not terribly expensive.  For example, you can get a good up-converting DVD player which will up-convert (digitally increase the resolution) a standard DVD to HD for not a whole lot of money.  HD is available through nearly every cable company and satellite company.  Some want to charge you and arm and a leg, some are fairly reasonable.  Getting that HD signal source is still the best way to get your moneys worth out of your investment.

  3. I think its about the same and will really depend on the make and model of your plasma or LCD. Although, I must say if you buy an HDTV and connect it to an analog SD cable the result is quite worse than that of a regular tv since you will see a lof of snow. That happened to me and I was forced to upgrade to a digital cable provider since the old cable provider came out really bad on the new HDTV. Once upgraded to digital TV or when playing even normal DVDs (not upconverted) the difference is still stellar from a regular tv.
