i find that history suites me best when i write my essays.  if history is one of your favorite subjects then you should go for it!

It's usually best to write what you know, but if you're trying to support your thesis then you want to add credibility to it.  So if you have access to books, history, or current news that can support your thesis that you can properly document your source that would be better.  But it also depends on the subject matter, and if you have experience that is relevant and can help to prove your point then I would use that.  Hope that helps.
