What is better, a 800 fps .22 cal or a 1000 fps .177 cal?(pellet guns)?

Generally .22's have a greater percentage of velocity retained, momentum is greater. The heavier pellets also are less effected by the wind.

On the plus side for .177, the higher velocity means flatter trajectory.

This 550 fps .22 has a maximum shooting distance of 333 yds.

Here's how you calculate the kinetic energy of each projectile.  You will need to know the weight of each pellet.  For each pellet, you take the velocity of the pellet and square it.  Multiply this big number by the weight of the pellet in grains.  Take the number that you get and divide by 450,400 to get the ft. pounds of energy for each.

14.3 grains @800fps=21 ft lbs

7.9 grains @1000fps=17.5 ft lbs

(.177 PBA ammo) 5 grain note solid @ 1200 fps=16 ft lbs but higher penetration using the solid gold ammo

(.22 pba ammo)9.8 grain note solid at 1000 fps=19 ft lbs but higher penetration yet again because of the pba's solid construction so

Most Powerful=800 fps 22 cal using 14.3 grain flatheads

deepest penetrating=1000 fps 9.8 grain solid

flattest shooting=1200 fps 5.5 grain solid

most cosmetically destructive=1200 fps 5.5 grain solid

loudest=1200 fps 5.5 grain solid

most effective thin skin game=800 fps 14.3 grain flatheads

most effective on thick skin game=1000 fps 9.8 grain solid

most accurate=1000 fps 7.9 grain

so..... if your hunting you want the 800 fps 14.3 grain pellets and the 9.8 grain pellets at 1000 fps using thicker skin game and the 22 has cheaper ammo

but if your a sole target shooter go with the 1000 fps .177 but use 10.5 grain crosman magnum premiers because they will slow your velocity but increase your accuracy and knockdown power on targets like the animal targets you can buy from the airgun manufacturers
