under 700 i suggest Nikon D40

buy the nikon d40 its very affordable. or if you want more megapixels then get the nikon d60. nikon is excellent.

There is no BETTER between these two cameras ... they are both excellent camera systems.

Both the Nikon D40 with AF-S 18-55 mm ED and Canon Rebel with 18-55 mm lens are under $700.  They are both entry level DSLR's

Choose the camera which is best for you after you hold both in your hands and see how well you like the way the feel for you.

One note ... don't let the pixel count influence your choice.
