Question:

What is better, an r22 Air conditioning unit or a r410?

I know that the R410 is newer and better for the environment but I have been told it does not cool as well and because it is so new all the problems have really not been worked through with it. I am told that even though they are phasing out R22 in 2010, parts and such will be available until 2030.

I am torn and don't know what to do and what to get. My AC broke and we need a new one. I want to get something that is good for the environment and if they are phasing out R22's it makes sense to get a R410 but I am afraid of doing this just yet as I am told the R410 models that are out now are just not up to par......

I am lost in what to do and need to get a new AC installed tomorrow. Anyone who knows anything about AC's and the pros and cons of each type please let me know asap.

It would be so appreciated!!!

  1. HVACTech.:  You will be better off with the r410 unit. as more of the market opens up to r410 the price will go down. With r-22 it will only increase in price just as r-12 did, it will become harder to find as supplies are depleted. They are already phasing out r-22 and the price has more than doubled in the past few years. r410 has a future whereas r-22 has none. Hope that helps you decide. Good luch!!

  2. It's always better to wait until a product has been on the market a few years, to work the bugs out and let the price come down. Go with a proven winner and you'll be a lot safer and happier.

  3. Get an R-22 air conditioner. You will not be effected at all with the 22 phase out issue.

The most obvious operational difference between the two refrigerants is the temperature pressure relationship. The pressure of R410a is approximately 1.6 times greater than R-22.The oil is also extremely hydroscopic,in that it very readily absorbs moisture if the system was open to the atmosphere. These and other conditions make service work more unfriendly as opposed to working with 22.

Both gases will cool well but I have installed many R410a air conditioners where the home owner would make comments on how their old R-22 air conditioner seemed to cool far better. The repairs are also more costly as compared to a R-22 unit and that will not change.R 410a has never been an inexpensive gas and will also increase even more.

If you were changing your unit out 10 years down the road,I would lean to the R 410a unit but you are not.

The R-22 unit is by far your best bet today.

    Good luck

  4. just because there phasing out R22 does not mean theres not a drop in replacement for it the pressures are much lower and a leak in a 410 system is serious i would stick with R 22 spend your money on a higher seer system it will pay off in the long run if you plan on staying there a while gl
