I want to become a photographer, and I think one of these two cameras would be a good start, I know the other half is about good lenses and lighting and all that good stuff. But first I want to hear what you guys think is a better camera and why?

Any additional advice on getting started on photography is highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance..

  1. HI there.   Both are good cameras.  In my opinion what makes the camera really good is the person who stands behind it.   Since you sound pretty much like a novice,  you could choose either one... since you are going to need lenses.   I would tell you that if you already had some Nikon lenses and accessories... go with Nikon.    Check out DPReview (.com) a site that will provide you with information on each of those cameras... all of the specs and features, including ratings,   and prices at the moment.   You will learn way more by reading what the professional testers have to say.   Good luck...  photographers are neat people!!  :)

  2. of course nikon d60 is better

  3. They are both good cameras and while they are the entry level DSLR cameras to the two most used professional 35 mm and DSLR cameras in the world, only you can tell which is the best for your style of shooting.

Go into a camera store that sells both and hold and use them and see which fits your shooting style the best.

    NOTE TO Fallen:

Actually there are many, many more Nikon lenses available than Canon.  The simple reason is that all but a handful of Nikon lenses made since 1959 can be used by any of the Nikon DSLR's .. I use a 35 year old Nikon 20 mm and 500 mm on my D300 a few times a month.

Canon lenses made before 1987 are NOT compatible, since that was when Canon dumped their fine AE-1 series cameras and lenses for the current EOS cameras and lenses.

If I had a smaller budget, I would actually choose the Nikon D40 and a few AF-S lenses (Nikon's version of the Canon USM lenses).

Do NOT be fooled by pixel counts ... please.

  4. It's really a matter of opinion. Personally I prefer the Canon because they have a larger selection of lenses available for their cameras and I like the interface better.

The Nikon is an awesome camera as well though. A smaller selection of lenses to be sure, but but the Nikkor lenses are some of the best on the market. I also think the interface is a little more complicated on the Nikon.

Like I said though, it's all a matter of personal opinion. Both of the companies have an established reputation in the digital imaging field and would be a perfect camera to get you started. Neither one of them will disappoint you.

As far as getting started in photography, I would recommend definetly reading the manual that comes with the camera to get a clearer understanding of how to change the different functions of the camera and understanding what that mean as a good photographer should know their equipment just as well as they understand the artistic side of photography. The other thing I would recommend if the option is available is to go to a local community college and register to take some of the photography classes offered there. Generally the tuition is not very much for a single class and you will probably take a lot from the class if you really do have an interest in the field. Their also might be professional photographers in your area that would be willing to do an apprenticeship with you to help you get started.

If there are any specialty camera shops in your area that would be the best place to go as their sales people have training and should have worked with cameras before. If that's not an option definetly go at least to an electronics specialty store such as Best Buy, Circuit City, or Ritz Camera over a place like Wal-Mart or Target as their sales people will be much better prepared than a big box general retail location.

  5. Nikon....i believe their cameras are more practical and their design looks better.....its very hard to compare between the image quality of canon and nikon, the performance of their lenses are uncomparable also....both of them are equally good..its rather like up to the preference of the user.....

  6. As the others have said, both are good cameras.  What you should do is go to a good camera store like Ritz, and hold these cameras in your hands.  Take some pictures with them and see which one feels best to you.  You will be able to tell which one works for you, and how easy it is for you to use the controls.   Also talk to the salesperson and get their advice.

If you buy it from Ritz, they offer free lessons in how to use the camera, which is very valuable.  If you buy it from some other place, check into taking some classes at your community college.  In the meantime, you will be able to use the automatic settings till you learn the manual ones.

    Good luck!

  7. nikon cause they have good digital slr cameras

  8. In my opinion the Canon Rebel XTI 10.1 is better. I just puchased this camera so of course I think this one is the best choice. I want to get into photography as well and everyone I talked to said the Canon Rebel was best! Also I can tell you the best place to buy it is online at www.digicombos.com. You can buy the Rebel XTI starter package which is the one I got. It comes with the 18-55mm lens, 75-300mm lens, digital slave flash, wide angle lens, 2GB memory card, screen protector, hi-speed card reader, 3 lens filters, lens cleaning kit, camera case, table top tripod, full size tripod, and a Canon XTI tutorial DVD. You can get all of that for $949.99 and free shipping! Trust me I looked everywhere and they are the cheapest! Great buy! They also have alot of other starter packages with different cameras. Check it out I'm sure you will find what your looking for. But as far as I'm concerned the Canon Rebel is the way to go. I'm still learning everything about it, but so far so good! Good luck!!!
