  1. blu ray

  2. Unfortunately all the other answers are either factually wrong, unhelpful, or both.

HD DVD and Blu-ray are identical from an audio and video quality perspective. Disks in both formats are 1080p/24 fps native. The two disk formats are incompatible, but players of both formats play and upconvert DVD. Both formats support advanced audio codecs.

Either are good choices if you can take advantage of the higher resolution. Ideally, this means having a mid to large screen 1080p HDTV with HDMI connectivity. However, even a 720p HDTV can provide limited benefit (relative to an upconverted DVD) if watched at optimum distance (~2-3 X screen size). That said, the benefits are not as great as many would claim ... certainly nothing like the benefit of DVD over VHS. For many consumers the limited benefits are not worth the high cost.

In my view, of the two, HD DVD is the slightly better choice for several reasons:

    - the hardware is more standard and more mature.

    - players are less expensive

    - ALL HD DVD players support ALL special/extra features, while many Blu-ray players do not.

    - Blu-ray is encumbered with region coding and DRM (e.g. BD+) mechanisms while HD DVD disks are not.

    - All HD DVD players play CDs; not so Blu-ray players.

Personally, I question whether an HD disk player is currently a good investment unless bought as an upconverting DVD player that also plays HD disks.

In the long run there may be 'winner' in the "format war", but since neither format has been able to clearly win and HD DVD is not only not losing ground to Blu-ray, but even showing sings of catching up, neither format is likely to be abandoned by studios.

HD disks will likely remain as niche formats (relative to DVD), with dual format players becoming available at lower cost than present over the next year or so. In the long run some forms of Video on Demand (VOD) or HD download will be the most likely successor to DVD, with HD disks remaining a format for the minority of consumers willing to pay premium prices and able to benefit from HD disks.

  3. I think you're comparing apples to oranges. You should be asking if DVD or Blu Ray is better. Blu Ray is bigger than DVD discs, so it can store more information (including HD)

  4. BLU RAY TIMES 1000000000000000000000000.

blu ray SO CLEAR, kind of looks 3d

HD VERY CLEAR! looks like you are really there.

    xoxo

  5. Commenting only on technical ability: The image quality between the two formats are identical. The greatest advantage that Blu Ray has is its ability to store much more information. This is'nt an issue when it comes to movies, but video games using Blu Ray could definitely utilize this advantage.

  6. Technically BluRay has a higher definition at 1080p where as HD DVDs will only play 1080i. However the human eye can't tell the difference between the two on screens less than 75" so if you have a monster projector then I would go bluRay. Another advantage of bluRay is that discs can hold much more information (about 50G) where an HD-DVD will only hold about 20G. However this is still irrelevant because the even a PS3 game on bluRay uses an average of 2-3G.

I personally like HD-DVD for two reasons. 1) they are much cheaper as is the equipment 2) Bluray discs are much thinner because they use a special blue laser to read information rather than the standard red laser. This makes them MUCH easier to scratch and ruin the disc. Imagine how often you will have problems with rented movies.

Overall I would wait to see which one comes out ahead. Eventually one will pull out of the market causing the price to drop dramatically. Also you won't have to worry  having an expensive player and collection of movies that you can't really use.
