  1. Which is better, a sportscar or a minivan?  It depends what you want them for.

Cockatiels (which are actually small relatives of cockatoos) cost much less than cockatoos and are generally easier to deal with.  They're considered an ideal "beginner bird".  They're moderately affectionate, males talk fairly well (often better than cockatoos), and they're much quieter than cockatoos. The large white cockatoos - the velcro birds - are expensive, LOUD, need lots of space and want lots of attention and loving.  The small cockatoos (e.g., goffin, bare-eyed) are cheaper, but still more expensive than cockatiels.  They also want lots of attention, but they're hyperactive more often than cuddly (e.g., see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fkw6XBCkt... ).

If you're interested in breeding birds or color variations you want a cockatiel.  If you want a quiet or relaxed bird, you want a cockatiel.  If you're not willing to put in as much effort or only want to commit for ~20 years, you want a cockatiel.  If you know what you're doing, are willing to trade more effort and headache for more reward, and are willing to commit for 30-70 years, you might prefer a cockatoo.  I don't recommend the big 'toos for most people. see http://www.mytoos.com/main.shtml

  2. It depends, do you have any experience with birds? Cockatoos are a large bird and require a lot of attention. If you never owned a bird before, you are better off starting with a parakeet. Large parrots can live up to 50-70 yrs old, are you prepared to take that resposibility?

  3. Cockatoo, the are way prettier!

  4. cockatoos..they are the sweetest

  5. WOW big difference to compare! I guess the choice would depend on what your looking for -

Cockatoo is a much bigger bird and requires more space (cage wise)  Cockatoos are ok talkers and most are very attentive to One person - vs many in a family.  They can be very affectionate - depending on the breed of cockatoo

Cockatiels are small and dont require alot of space (enough to keep the tail from rubbing the cage). They can also learn to talk - and actually do pretty well.  Handfed babies seem to like most of the family members - but still prefer a single main owner.

Both are loud - but the cockatoo would be louder -

PERSONALLY - the cockatoo is the only one I"d have - I love the mulucan but wouldn't mind a Triton and even a goffin.  Each has its one characteristics different from the other - so hard to choose!  ONE OF EACH MAYBE!

  6. A cockatiel is a nice bird, and at least 20 times cheaper.  Cockatoo's are more care, since they're very emotional birds and prone to plucking and self mutilation in some cases if left alone......they're very social and want people around and attention.  Someone gave my boyfriend a Moluccan cockatoo that started plucking and he gave it to me.  The bird started picking the skin on it's stomach area, I had to get it to a vet, then I got it a new, good home.  I was hoping I could keep it, but not with having to work and live alone, with no one around during the day........
