What is better a wood fence or plastic?

I need something that will last long and also hold up with minimal repairs.

The plastic fence loods good, no maintenance, but costs a lot.  The wood fence is also durable, but needs repair and paint fairly often.

Vinyl fences are better because they are virtually maintenance free. You don't have to worry about painting them or having them treated because of insects.

COST  ; plastic cost much more overall, but this is somewhat off-set by the cost of stains, repair materials and labor the wooden fence will require over time.

MANTENANCE ; Plastic is pretty much install and forget about. Wood on the other hand will need to be kept in shape every few years, including your neighbors side, which you can't even see. Some boards may rot and be replaces. Stain will need to be re applied, screws may come lose, etc.

APPEARANCE ; Wood looks so much better and has a nice warm feel to it. Plastic is rather stark and in white, looks very artifical.

PROPERTY VALUE ; I would assume the plastic would be a boost to your property, as would wood. Don't know if there would be a substantial difference.

CREATIVITY ; without a doubt there are more things you could do to alter the style and shape of your wooden fenceing over plastic, including the hardware and gate appearance.

If you want durable and low maintenance, plastic (vinyl) is better. A sprinkler system using well (or ground) water can stain a vinyl fence permanently so adjust sprinkling pattern or fence to avoid exposure to iron and minerals in a ground water sprinkling system
