Depends if you like cleaning c**p up.  If you do > go with the dog.  If not, the cat knows were to put it & you just dump it out.  

Or  if you need a watchdog, then the answer is obvious.  But if you like being ignored, the cat will be just the ticket.

Also, if you tend to be away for long periods, the cat will get by just fine if you leave sufficient food & drink out.  The dog will eat it all in one day, c**p all over the house, chew the furniture & be pissed off at you for being gone.  The cat could not care less if you ever come back > as long as there's food.
