  1. The letter of invitation is better as this shows the consulate that there will be US residents (citizens or PRs) who they can hold accountable if someone overstays their visa. Remember though that this does not guarantee approval of the visa as there are still other criteria to surpass. These are the proof of adequate funds and sufficient ties to return to country of origin.**

  2. A letter of invitation cuts two ways.  It demonstrates a legitimate reason for travel to the US on one hand.  On the other hand it's evidence of a support network in the event you decide to overstay your visa.  Personally, I consider it less than useless.

PS.  Nobody is held responsible if you overstay no matter how many letters of invitation they wrote you.

  3. If there staying with your parents a letter is better

  4. The truth is the best for a visa.  Go to the interview prepared to show that your friend has real ties to her place of residence abroad, like a job, family, education, career, property, etc.  The letter of invitation is not required and may not be all that helpful.  Some consuls don't even look at them.  A good consul will know if your friend is lying and then there will be no convincing the consul that he/she ought to give your friend a visa.
