What is better for my 1981 starcraft- long or short shaft?

  1. long shaft but if youy boat in shallow waters go for the short one


  2. How long is your transom?  I think you'll need to figure that out first.

  3. Take a tape measure from the top where the engine sits to the botton of the boat straight down that will give you the height 15=20=25=30

  4. I'd bet on Long Shaft, but zebj25 is right.  Measure from the top of the engine cutout on the transom to the bottom of the boat.  if it's over 15 inches then you need a long shaft.  As I said, almost everything built in 1981 was long shaft.   Once you have purchased the motor and begin to hang the motor. pay attention to the height of the cavitation plate.
