What is better public or private accounting?

I already have a BS degree in general business and I am starting the certficate program in accounting this fall at the university. Please tell me is it better to start work as entry level accountant in the public or private field of accounting? Is it easier to get an intership in the public or private accounting field, or are there other options? Thank you!

Start off in a CPA firm. The training is better than any private company can give you and you get to audit and learn lots about various industries. From there, you'll find your calling or niche, and then you can move out to private accounting if you want. Some people stay in audit all their lives. In addition, people in CPA firms are more updated on the latest accounting standards. Accountants with private companies don't bother with new accounting standards which don't affect them, e.g. IFRIC 13.
