  1. lots of variables! desert or mountains total averages like distance of runs, or average ambiant temperature. both had decapods I like em both!

  2. Your question should say "WAS" the best. The PRR was absorbed into Conrail, and the AT&SF merged with the Burlington Northern to become the BNSF. Each had it's good & bad points. It would be hard to pick one over the other.

When I think of these two railroads I think of the PRR's Horseshoe Curve, and their classic GG1 locomotives, and for the AT&SF it would be the Super Chief with its famous red & silver "War Bonnet" Alco  PA-1's

  3. could you please expand on your question?

if you are talking freight lines...both don't exist anymore. the Sante Fe has been merged with BN and is now known as the BNSF (Burlington Northern Santa Fe)

The Pennsylvania Railroad company was purchased by Conrail----

The BNSF has more trackage (per mile), better maintenance facilities and it has much better service.

  4. are you asking as a prospective employee?

    or shipper?

    or just curious?

I mean they serve completely different areas so if you are located on the Santa Fe (now BNSF) system the Pennsy would be a horrible choice to try and ship a load of grain on.

  5. I didn't think the Pennsylvania R/R existed anymore.  Didn't it get absorbed into Conrail? Does Conrail still exist? I do know I see Conrail locomotives on Santa Fe trains. Living out west I will pick the S.F.B.N.

  6. PA RR was bought out by Conrail, Conrail was bought and split by Norfolk southern and CSXT.

Santa Fe and Burlington northern merged and are now BNSF.

BNSF is the 2nd largest RR in the US. Union Pacific is the largest.

  7. I model the SP, ATSF & GN.

I prefer the ATSF for modeling purposes, as I am a fan of their power, and the terrain is compatable for the SP as well as operating practice...  My focus is on the SP, but, for whatever reason,  Santa Fe models are plentiful at this time for the primary period I model (transition), for one just beginning to dive in and looking for a road to model.
