i have a 8500 now and to be honest it slams! but it got a rip in the rubber by my little sister putting stuff in the trunk so im in the market for a new sub. ive looked into RE but they are under new owner now and the old owenr well half owner started FI audio and they seem to be pretty nice. but what else is out there? i mean dont tell me about the orion hcca subs unless your only putting like 1000 watts to it or something off the wall. tell me about anything youve heard that suprised you by being just one sub. and please do not metion the type R's. the 8500 kills that thing...so im looking to get something thats a little bit louder than what i have right now without going up to a 15.

  1. Tough question to answer, to be honest.

The MTX 8500 is a nice sub at the 500W RMS range.  So many people rip on MTX and I'm not sure why.  They make good stuff ... particularly from the 5500 series & up.

FI Audio SSD's, Q's & BL's all hit hard with about 500W, but the Q's & BL's are built to take a lot more and aren't close to their potential at 500W.

Only other subs I can think of worth a listen ... RF Power T1 (Only because it's a 600W RMS sub.)  I'd have you consider a RF Power T2 or an MTX 9500, but they're both 1000W RMS subs and quite a bit pricier also.

Otherwise, replace the MTX 8500 with a new MTX 8500, maybe add a metal grill guard (the three bar type that goes a few inches above and to the sides ... since the MTX 8500 has great excursion and you don't want the sub to rattle it.).  That might help little-sister proof it some.
