  1. Usually you should keep at least 2 anti-spyware programs, because there are so many types of spyware that one program won't catch them all.  Spybot S&D used to be a very good program, but has fallen behind other programs lately.  I recommend Adaware, and you can also use MalwareBytes, which has a free version that you can use to scan your computer.  If you want real-time protection, like what Spybot does but without the NAGGING (spybot is notorious for that) then download Spyware Terminator, which in my experience has not taken up too much of my system resources and proved very reliably when I though I had spyware.  For anti-virus protection, if you aren't already paying for one, get Kaspersky, or if you want a free one, download AVG free.  If your computer is behind a router with a built in firewall, you don't need a firewall running, as this will just slow down your PC, so you can use Windows Firewall.  If you have a laptop, or if you aren't protected by a router's built-in firewall, then a software firewall is needed.  Comodo Firewall Pro and Zonealarm Firewall are two good free firewalls.  Here are some links:

    Adaware:  http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-2008/30...

    MalwareBytes:  http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

    Spyware Terminator:  http://www.download.com/Spyware-Terminat...

    Kaspersky:  www.kaspersky.com

    AVG free:  http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

    Comodo Firewall:  http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

    Zonealarm Firewall:  http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/c...

    Hope this helps!

  2. I use spybot

  3. I use both. More often than not, one program finds things the other did not. As a rule, you never load duplicate pieces of software because they can conflict (ie Norton Anti Virus and McAfee Anti Virus) but both Spybot and Adaware are benevolent.

Also, run WIndows Defender from Microsoft. Its free and can work in conjunction with those two.

  4. I suggest uninstalling AdAware and replacing it with SUPERAntiSpyware:

SUPER is a superior product. By far.

AdAware mostly detects "threats" that are harmless tracking cookies and even more harmless MRU's (most recently used), that was detected by AdAware. Neither cookies or MRUs pose any kind of a threat to a computer.

The detection of these non-existent threats by the free version of AdAware is a cheap marketing ploy to "encourage" people to purchase the full paid version.

  5. stick with spy bot search and destroy also get the superantispyware and getccleaner for your registry these are free
