  1. 1st answer is good. Walking is simple, cheap and convenient but also very limited as exercise goes. Cycling can provide far superior exercise.

  2. The answer depends on your objective. As I have aged, turning 60 a few days ago, I tend to lesser strenuous modes of exercise, and walking is my preferred mode. My bicycle was my choice over walking a number of years ago. However, I STILL use my fat tire flyer bicycle to get around town instead of driving, but not for exercise as such, simply for the economy of not using gasoline. I just can't afford the cost of driving these days. Both walking and cycling exercise a common group of overlapping muscles, mainly concerning your legs, lower back and abdomen. Any form of exercise uses calories and causes muscles to respond as a result. Cycling uses calories at a faster rate than walking, but both do essentially the same thing, just at a different rate. Like I said, it depends on your objective in doing exercise in the first place as to which would be best for you as an individual.

  3. Assuming you mean for the purpose of fitness, I would recommend cycling. While walking is a good low-impact exercise that costs virtually nothing outside of buying shoes, cycling provides a much better aerobic workout. You can still keep impact very low on your joints by cycling and get a much higher heart rate more easily, which you will need to do in order to experience more rapid results. (Unless you plan to become an avid rider, you don't need to worry so much about getting a heart rate monitor to see whether you are within your target heart rate, which is where your body most efficiently and safely burns calories.)

You can invest in an inexpensive bike, helmet, and other basic tools to keep your bike in good working order without spending too much money. Besides, riding a bike is more fun and gives you more options than walking. Start riding to the store, or to a friend's house. The options are endless.

    Good luck and have fun!
