Arterial compartment syndrome is when a muscle swells up (due to oedema or bleeding) inside a closed compartment causing pressure to build up, which means the expanded muscle pushes against nearby blood vessels and cuts off circulation. Parts of the body below the affected muscle will have poor blood flow, if any at all, and this could cause tissue to die.

    I believe this is most common in the leg, and is usually a result of an injury or surgery, though Wikipedia also mentioned "repetitive and extensive muscle use".

    Bilateral means affecting both sides.
