I was told this phrase comes from a time when the Moors from Spain and the Spanish Armada invaded Ireland hundreds of years ago. The Moors had their way with many young girls. These girls produced children with some Spanish characteristics, such as black hair or brown eyes, instead of the usual blue eyes and light or red hair. These children were referred to as the "black Irish"
