Blood to vampires is actually a more difficult to explain question. Vampires need blood because their blood (yes, they have blood in their bodys) can hold everything they need to survive. Exept oxigion. That's where humans come along. We humans are much luckier then vampires in that our blood system can carry oxigion helping us breath. Unlike vampires. When a vampire needs blood they begin to have a hard time breathing. Similar to a human who has Asthma. Well anyway, they need blood. So they begin getting very thirsty. If they are near humans then they would automatically grab the nearest one. Therfore relieving their suffering. As an example lets use Twilight. Edward is first near Bella. He hasn't hunted for a while. He was already very thirsty. He begins haveing a hard time breathing. He needs blood soon. He leaves for a few days to hunt. Imagine being very thirsty all day long and not being aloud to get any water. But all day an ice cold water bottle is right next to you. That is similar to how a vampire would feel. As to not tempt themselves, most steer clear of humans. So answering the question Blood is a life sorce as well as something to drink.
