  1. First let me explain Blu-Ray is not a DVD

    DVD = Digital Versatille Disc

    BD = Blu-Ray Disc

    Both use similar technologies, but so do CD's

    A BD uses a Blu/violet laser that is a much smaller ray of light to read data that is much more compacted on the disc. DVD's use a red laser that can not read the data of a Blu-ray. BD capacity is 25GB or 50GB dual layer, DVD's are 4.5GB or 9GB dual.

    Blu-Ray is a high definition format inntended for use with HDTV's it provides a superior picture and sound quality over regular DVD's.

    In order to play a BD, you need to buy a Blu-Ray player, the BD's will not play on a DVD player. But a DVD will play on a Blu-Ray player.

  2. The best thing to happen since sliced bread.  Well if you like movies that is.

  3. Blu-ray is a premium priced video disk format offering high defintion (1080p) video and high quality audio. It is an alternative to DVD. Some people feel DVD will be replaced by Blu-ray, but this is unlikely.

    Blu-ray disks (same size and appearance as DVDs) require a different player since the greater track density requires a blue (rather than red) laser. Currently only the PS3 is recommended. Players cost $300 or more. Blu-ray players will play and upconvert normal DVDs to near HD quality (as will less expensive stand alone upconverting DVD players).

    Blu-ray disks (depending where you are) cost from $5 -$20 more than DVDs.

    The minimum requirement to benefit (some improvement over DVD) from Blu-ray are an HDTV and HDMI connectivity. Full benefit requires a larger 1080p HDTV and a mid to high end audio system.

    See the link for an approximation of how the picture compares in the two formats (HD disk and DVD -- mouse-over on each picture and the image changes to the other format). The specific examples are HD DVD vs DVD (but Blu-ray and HD DVD give almost identical picture quality so the example is still valid).

  4. It's  just a fancy DVD that lasts longer than regular DVD.  They have a lot of endurance.

  5. It is a disc that uses a  blue violet laser (hence the name), this laser allows data to be closely put together on the disc so more data can be put onto the bluray disc (more than 5 times the data than a dual layer dvd).  This allows for higher res. media (ie movies) to fit onto a single disc.  The info stored on a bluray disc is closer to the surface it is more prone to damage.  To counter this they spray on a scratch resistant protective coating.

  6. It is now the only high definition DVD format. It uses a technology developed by Sony. The Blue Ray players will play old style DVDs,  or the new format Blue Ray DVDs. The new format allows higher definition, better sound and more on a disk. Instead of Godfather being on 2 DVDs, it would be on one, higher resolution with more extras. It is designed for the new flat screen HD TVs.
